Organiser’s Comments

Thank you to all who turned out at Mardley Heath today for this latest Saturday Series event. The
weather was cool but held up after recent rain leaving a few slightly muddy areas but pretty good
conditions nonetheless.
We were treated to Simon’s all-new 1:4000 map created using LIDAR giving better contour clarity
and accurate vegetation, meaning even those veterans of Mardley had something new to think
about. With Dan’s excellent courses, Mardley was at its technical best and the Short Blue felt like a
proper Middle Distance challenge. Maybe because of the combination of the new map and scale,
coupled with those challenging courses, a number of very experienced orienteers were caught out,
including the Controller/Mapper himself (and me!)
Everything ran like clockwork today thanks to all the HH volunteers. A big thank you to all who
helped – it makes a real difference to get a great cohort like today and it felt very straightforward to
run the event. And of course a huge thank you to Dan (Planner) and Simon (Controller). Both Dan
and Simon stepped in to take on these roles late on but still came up with some excellent courses,
despite having to contend with some late tree felling which meant some last minute course changes.
Our next Saturday Series is the postponed event at Stanborough Park on 8 th March
(https://www.herts-orienteering.club/events/event/stanborough-to-be-confirmed/), but before that
we have HH’s premier event of the year, the Ace of Herts at Ashridge South (https://www.herts-
orienteering.club/events/event/ashridge-ace-of-herts/). Entries for both events are already open on
SI Entries.
I hope to see as many of you as possible at both events.
