Well what a glorious early spring day for some fantastic orienteering in Ashridge Park. And with our new parking field this allowed all of the shorter courses to visit the south of the park for the very first time; providing some challenging courses and unusually steep sections for Ashridge.
The weather certainly played a part in making the day run so smoothly but what made the day so much easier for me was having a very able set of volunteers who made sure each part of the operation ran without any hitches. This was true from the moment cars started appearing in our parking field, through the enquiries and download teams in the event centre, past the string course, to the two starts at a not insignificant distance from the event centre, and then even further to a very remote road crossing; it all managed to click into place and I trust your experience on the day was as positive. We should not forget the very early starters who were out hanging controls in sub-zero temperatures and the late finishers collecting them all back in again and helping to clear the field. Please also take some time to look through the photographs of the event on the event results page.
Orienteering wouldn’t happen without these dedicated volunteers and event officials, so I would like to extend some special thanks to Laura for planning such great courses as well as Mark and Davey for their controlling and ensuring all the courses ran so smoothly. One thing I was hoping to achieve was to create a friendly atmosphere around our event centre (certainly helped by the weather) so I hope you managed to have some lively discussion with other orienteers and enjoy some of the food on offer from Holy Smoke, as this was their first time at an orienteering event and they did appear to be doing a good trade.
Finally, I would like to express my thanks to Martin from Rampart Ventures who allowed us the use of the field with our usual hire fee going to the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted, and thank you to all the orienteers who made additional contributions when entering their courses. At the end of the day we did manage to leave almost no trace, apart from the tyre tracks through the field to the exit gate at quite a distance from the entry gate.
There was also one item of lost property, a child’s Lands’ End coat of outer space. Please let us know if this belongs to you and we will figure a way of returning it at another convenient event.
