Training
Hertfordshire Orienteering provides regular training events to help members improve their orienteering. In addition, assistance and advice for newcomers is available from our Meet and Greet team at our events. Just look out for friendly-looking people in Hi-Viz and they can help you get started.
In this section we also have details of O skills and techniques (see here..) and the latest training news (see here..).
Training for newcomers – adults and Juniors
The best way to get started is to just give it a go. Come to one of our events [see Fixtures] and we can give you instruction on the basics and some starting tips. If you are coming and would like some pointers or if you need help signing up please contact training@herts-orienteering.club.
We also have special training events designed for newcomers to introduce the basics, explain the jargon and focus on the core skills. Check our fixtures list for details.
Training for Juniors
HH offers friendly and fun training events for all juniors. Everyone trains in a group with similar skills and experience with a coach. Younger and inexperienced juniors may need to train with a parent until they are confident with the basics (a good test is if you can navigate a yellow course independently).
More experienced juniors can join regional development squads and some of our juniors go on to be selected for training with the GB junior talent squad and international competitions.
Training for everyone
There are training opportunities open to all ages and levels of experience:
Club training days – an opportunity to practice your technique, get some coaching and perhaps do some races or relays.
Street-O – Weekly events throughout the summer.
Permanent Courses and MapRun App – practice on your own at a permanent orienteering course or use the maprun App to run on various local courses. For more information and instructions click here…
