Welwyn Garden City Centenary Map Challenge
Sunday 8th May 2022, Campus East, WGC
Updated discount code below
Hertfordshire Orienteering Club brings you the WGC Centenary Map Challenge – and if you reside in Welwyn-Hatfield Borough, entry is free*
*subject to availability – get your entry in early!
What is it?
An urban navigation challenge – find the points marked on the map in the correct order – fastest wins. There’s no need to be competitive though – families going for a leisurely walk around our course are equally welcome. The event is also being marketed to experienced orienteers as the “Welwyn Garden City Race“.
What does it involve?
Watch this video to learn the basics:
How do I enter?
Entries need to be made through SIEntries. It should all be self-explanatory but we also have some helpful hints. For free entry (see below), you will need to register by 1st May, and before our pot of free entries runs out.
How much does it cost?
Standard adult entry is £13 (covers entry, non-member levy and timing chip hire), however early-bird residents of Welwyn-Hatfield can get entry for free by quoting “WHBC” in the registration site discount code box [your postcode will be checked to confirm eligibility; we reserve the right to cancel ineligible entries without notice].
It’s free? What’s the catch?
Yes, it’s free! We have a number of free entries due to generous sponsorship from the Welwyn Garden City BID group. In return we ask that we may send occasional emails detailing upcoming local orienteering events; you may unsubscribe at any time.
Wasn’t the centenary in 2020?
Yes it was… We were planning to put on this event in Spring 2020 but circumstances conspired against us! We haven’t given up though so here, at last, it is.
Where will the courses go?
We don’t want to give too much away but junior-friendly courses (6 &7) will be on very quiet business parks and residential pavements. Longer courses (1-5) will cover a mixture of terrain – mainly residential roads but also detailed business areas, town centre areas and some off-road paths.
What do I need?
Not much. We will provide the map and a hired timing chip. If you have a compass it might be useful but is not essential. Dress for the weather.
Won’t I be out of my depth?
We hope not. We will have helpers dedicated to showing you what to do, how to read the map etc.
