Ace of Herts, Ashridge South & East

Printable final details can be found here (pdf)

Terrain Ashridge is a fine area of runnable deciduous woodland. A planning aim is that the winners of the technical courses will have done little path running. The beginners’ courses inevitably use paths, and these can be very muddy: participants should ensure they have appropriate footwear.

Ashridge South overlaps with the area previously used as Ashridge West. It is gently undulating, with a steep scarp slope and some areas of contour detail. The going is fast, apart from a few limited areas of denser woodland and around individual fallen trees.

Ashridge East, visited by courses from the East start, has not been used for many years. It is more undulating in parts. There are some light brashings and extraction early in these courses, and a short burst of light undergrowth, neither of which will slow the fittest. Overall, the going here is also fast.

In both parts scattered clearings contain bracken, but at the time of writing this is subsiding nicely.

You can ignore notices asking the public to stay on the paths because of deer management activity. There will no such activity on the day of the event.

We would like to thank the National Trust, and Ashridge Estate in particular, for access to this excellent forest.
