Organiser’s Comments
I hope you all enjoyed the second day of the Hertfordshire weekend. St Albans is a very attractive city and also provides good technical challenges to the urban orienteer; Simon’s courses lived up to that challenge and it was good to hear the high level of positive comments as people finished. The use of St. Albans School added to the technical orienteering challenge and also provided us with a superb venue for the event centre, central, comfortable and close to the start and finish. I hope the serendipitous proximity to the ‘spectator control’ also added to the day. I hope you didn’t mind the downside, that we were unable to provide car parking on site.
I had initially worked on 200 participants. In the end, 304 of you ran and we were able to cope without excessive queues. It suggests people like having two events in the weekend to provide added value. Working with WAOC in advance enabled us to share publicity and enable joint entries.
HH members volunteered in large numbers and were excellent in carrying out their jobs. Having such a professional team made the whole day run like clockwork and I would like to thank them for their work. The weather supported us too, with the rain holding off until nearly all controls were collected.
I’d like to particularly thank St. Albans School for the use of their grounds and the ‘loop’ facility for the event centre. Thanks also go to St. Albans District Council and St. Albans Cathedral for their support and permission to use the city and cathedral grounds respectively.
