Haileybury, 5th July 2025
July 1st: updates are marked in red.
July 3rd: sorry that entries appeared full for a while; we have now changed the GLOSS + optional extension to be starts every 30 seconds to accommodate all entries within the 90 minute window
Welcome to one of our Saturday events. They are particularly aimed at first-timers and less experienced orienteers, although there are courses for all levels. This event is also part of the GLOSS series of races for clubs around London.
This is a new area for orienteering.
Beginners | First timers are very welcome. Look for our greeters in hi-vis jackets who will give you socially-distanced help.
You can go around individually, in pairs or in a larger family group. From an entries perspective, pairs and groups are treated as a single runner – it’s one entry, you get one map, one timing chip (“dibber”) and one finish time listed in the Results. We charge per “entry” not per person and it’s easiest to enter in advance – see Entering for the first time for more info on how to do this. If you’ve not orienteered before, we suggest most people start with the yellow course. Young juniors – say primary school age – and family groups are better on white. People confident with a map and compass may start on orange. If you find your course too easy, club policy is to offer you a run on the next course up at no cost, provided there’s enough time and there are maps available. Don’t forget to download between runs! |

Location | Haileybury College Hertford Heath SG13 7PP W3W sober.those.purple Grid ref TL353108 |
||||||||||||||||||
Parking | When you arrive at Hertford Heath, take a turn on to College Road. Please drive with care for runners or fellow competitors walking to the event centre or the start. A short and visible section at the approach to the car park is a bottle-neck and only one car can pass at a time. Please follow the instructions of the marshals. |
||||||||||||||||||
Public Transport | Rail from Liverpool Street to Broxbourne and then 341 or 641 bus to the College Arms PH. Buses run once per hour from Broxbourne station at 9:20 & 10:20. It’s a 600m walk from the pub.
Terrain | Courses will use the school grounds and adjacent woodland.
We are allowed to run our courses in Haileybury but we do not have permission to wander around among the buildings after our run. Some of the houses are home to Summer Campers so children are still on site. |
||||||||||||||||||
Map | 1:4,000 pre-marked maps for all courses on waterproof paper. This is a sprint map which uses a slightly different set of symbols. The most important difference is that thick black lines are only used for uncrossable features.
The map was made in January by Simon Errington and has updated for this event. However the forest is very well used by students and locals so you might find many extra minor paths that are not marked on the map. White and yellow course maps are A4 and available at the pre-start. The Orange map is A3. The GLOSS is A3 and double-sided with the extension on the reverse. Control descriptions will be on the map. There will be loose control descriptions available for the GLOSS courses. |
||||||||||||||||||
Courses | Courses for everybody from beginners of any age to experienced orienteers.
|
||||||||||||||||||
Course Notes | The White course has some sections guided by tapes.
Runners on the GLOSS course can decide if they would like to extend their run after 3.5km. If so, punch at a designated shadow finish (but not at the actual finish just yet) then turn the map and complete the extension. The event centre is close to start and finish. Courses close 12:45. |
||||||||||||||||||
Starts | You may choose a start time between 10.00-11.30. To accommodate numbers, GLOSS starts will be every 30 seconds. Please try to keep to your start block to minimise queueing.
Courses will close promptly at 12:45. Please choose a start time that will give you ample time to complete your run by then. |
||||||||||||||||||
Entry & Fees | Entries are now open through SI Entries. You can enter up to 11:00 on the day (subject to map availability).
If you don’t have your own dibber (timing chip) you’ll need to hire one. Dibber hire £1. Charge for lost dibbers £35. |
||||||||||||||||||
Timing | Sportident punching will be used. SIAC will be enabled for those with ‘contactless’ dibbers, but you must punch start and finish.
Facilities | We are going to have our own male / female changing rooms with hot showers and two toilets each.
There are several points where you can get water:
|
||||||||||||||||||
Results | Interim results will be published direct to the club website https://www.herts-orienteering.club every few minutes during the event.
Full results will be published on the same page and on Routegadget as soon as possible after the event. We aim to put provisional results up that evening. |
||||||||||||||||||
Event cancellation | Extreme weather conditions could result in late cancellation of the event. If cancellation is needed a message will be posted on the www.herts-orienteering.club website and an email sent to all those entered as soon as is possible after a decision has been made.
Please check before travelling. |
||||||||||||||||||
Dogs | Dogs are not allowed.
Safety | Some right of ways crisscross the site and woods, so dog walkers, horses, bike riders or general members of the public could present. Take care and please be kind with them.
Orienteering is an adventure sport. You take part at your own risk and are responsible for your own safety. A full risk assessment has been carried out. You must go to Download even if you don’t finish your course. We need to confirm you’re back safely. |
