Organiser’s Comments
It was thankfully less windy than in previous days but still a chilly, weakly sunny day – six degrees at the mass start.
This year the friendly young cows recently introduced to keep vegetation under control troubled neither the control hangers nor the controllers when seeking to place controls in the early morning.
Clear winner this year was Jack Kosky, M21 and latterly of Southdowns Orienteers, who was one of five of the 92 competitors to win bonus points for getting back early having collected all the controls. Jack earned 600 plus 110 bonus points for being over 11 minutes early. Highest scoring woman was Hazel Reade (W40), IND , who scored 450 points in just under the hour.
The planner was again able to use the remapped North Lawn, the showpiece public space in front of the old Trent Park house, showcasing the magnificent views to be had looking down to the lake and up to the obelisk in the distance. The Berkeley Homes redevelopment project of the Trent Park estate is now almost complete, and, with that, the prospect of through-access across the water garden at the eastern end of the lake finally being realised.
It takes a team to make this event happen, so thanks to Tom Cochrane (HH) for planning and in particular to those who assisted in putting out controls shortly after dawn break, namely Ian Byford (HH), the planner’s parents Jill and Matthew Cochrane (SROC) as well as his brother. Also Ronan and Julie Cleary (LOK) for controlling and running the Start and setting up the Finish for the umpteenth year in a row. Kevin and Laura Parkes (both HH) for handling the IT side of things very smoothly as ever.
Further thanks to Emma Cochrane (HH) for providing first aid cover, Mike Bennett (HH) for handling the set-up of online entries, Charles, Marion and Clive (all LOK) for being generally useful around Car Parking / Assembly / Start (Clive)/ driving a sprained ankle casualty to Barnet General (Charles). Finally, thanks also to Sebastian Flesch (HH) who assisted in collecting controls.
