Mardley Heath Local Event, nr Woolmer Green, 06/05/06.Next HH Event - Frithsden Local Event, nr Berkhamsted, 03/06/06. Results to the Yellow, Orange, Light Green 2, Light Green, Green 2 and Green Courses. If you have any queries about the results please contact Kevin Parkes, Planner's CommentsThe weather was very kind to us and probably accounted for the higher than average and expected turnout for an event of this nature. I hope that you enjoyed the 1:5,000 map which was revised to make it more readable and the intricate area which was at its best and nicely runnable on the day. Apologies for the problems which barred later runners on the Green and Light Green courses from entering the area to the West of the A1(M) and for running short of maps on the Green course causing us to provide 1st proof maps as an alternative to awaiting 'returns'. Rather than voiding the above courses the results have been 'regrouped' for purposes of allowing comparison (by the most competent Kevin and Graham Parkes on the SI/Software team). Many thanks to all the HH members who gave cheerful and willing assistance Barry Breed Organiser's CommentsI hope that the majority of you enjoyed the Mardley Heath event. Many thanks to the volunteers who helped out on the day and allowed me to relax on the whole knowing that everything was in capable hands. Apologies to those of you who were affected by the access problems to the three controls west of the A1(M) on the Green and Light Green courses. We have used the Mardley Heath map for a number of years now and had incorrectly assumed that the land to the west of the A1(M) was part of the Heath and owned by Welwyn Hatfield District Council. The notice present at the weekend indicating that it is private land was not in place when the courses were planned and discussion on the day with the landowner confirmed that the notice had been put up very recently. The people that were vehemently protesting at competitors using the land were neighbours of the landowner and we are saddened that they took an aggressive stance with some competitors, in particular junior runners. Once the land access issue was brought to our attention, we warned starters on the Green and Light Green courses of the problem and stationed an official at the underpass to ensure no further runners used the private land. Before the event was over we met with the landowner to apologise for our inadvertent use of his land and to seek permission to collect the controls. He accepted our apology, was very understanding and did not rule out future use of his land for orienteering for which permission would obviously be sought prior to use. Competitors on the Green and Light Green courses that ran a slightly abbreviated version have been moved in the results into separate Green 2 and Light Green 2 courses. While strictly both courses should be voided we hope you will feel that this is a more appropriate compromise for today's low key event.
