Verulamium Park Try-O Event Results 15/10/00Results to the Light Green,

Yellow ( with guidance sheet ) Colour Coded Courses. Planner's Comments - Eric Brown.Verulamium Park, although a beautiful setting, is not the easiest area on which to plan orienteering courses because, apart from one technically interesting area to the west near the Roman wall, the ground is predominantly open and runnable. Add to that the many football pitches and the golf course and you end up with limited choices. As a result I have spent many happy hours since July - invariably in the rain - trying to optimise the courses. It was therefore particularly embarrassing that an error should have appeared on the Orange map, caused by inadvertently printing an interim version. I hope that we managed to send out sufficient scouts to minimise any problems to those on the course and that the error did not cause too much grief for those taking part. On the day the hangers and collectors were brilliant and the organiser so much in control that - the glitch apart - the Planner's job was reduced to admiring the views of the Abbey through the autumn leaves. Organiser's Comments - Jane Breed.First a big thankyou to you the competitors for turning out in such satisfyingly large numbers, making the work of the officials worthwhile. Second, an equally big thankyou to all the club members who either offered or agreed to help. It made my task simplicity itself! The planner has mentioned our problems with the orange course which we minimised as best we could by sending helpers to the rescue. Scrutiny of the results shows that early runners were undoubtedly disadvantaged and such an error would void the course in more stringent circumstances. I have published them nevertheless as I felt you would like to see them. They cannot, of course be used towards a colour-coded award! I apologise for not finding the error before the first starts and hope it did not spoil the day for too many of you. Putting on any event, even a very small one, without an official controller now looks like an over-economy in manpower. I have not published par times for any course as they would be meaningless with so many pairs and trios. If you are a beginner, you are probably wondering why you have been given a strange age! Orienteering operates on age classes, the youngest of which is 10yrs. Anyone 10 or under this year is classed M10 (men) or W10 (women). The classes then change every 2yrs. so even if you are only eleven this year, you are classed M/W 12. Once you become 21, you compete with everyone aged 21 - 34 yrs. As soon as you enter the year when you become 35, you change class to M/W 35. The steps are then 5 yearly. These classes allow you to compare your personal performance against others of similar age. More high profile events set courses according to age class rather than colour code them. Should you decide that you have discovered a new sport and want to carry on, membership of a club and the British Orienteering Federation become the way forward.
