Hertfordshire Orienteering Club

informally known as Happy Herts (HH)

Our next Saturday Series event

Our next Saturday Series event will be held at Verulamium, St Albans on October 1st.
Event details…

Before the main event, we are offering a Training Session, starting at 9:30.  Details can be found in the article below  or on the Training page.

This will be the first date in the new Youth League season which sees some changes in the way the league will operate.  The main focus will be to encourage group participation of children new to orienteering. Competition will be based on school years and in general, courses will be easier.

Map Reservation – New!

Verulamium will not only be the first of the new format Youth League but also the first usage of our redeveloped map reservation site. Redeveloping the site was necessary for several reasons:

  1. Mozilla are closing the Persona service that was used for login into the site. The new site allows you to use your Yahoo, Google, Facebook or OpenId accounts to login.
  2. We need support the class format used in the new Youth League as well as the traditional Yellow / Orange / Light Green / Blue courses that will continue to be offered at non-Youth league Saturday events.
  3. Although it happens quite rarely there are occasionally situations where having two open events would be desirable. With the new version this will be possible.

While we were doing the upgrade we also took the opportunity to introduce a few new features the most exciting of which is the ability to save for reuse the details of runners you regularly enter.  Users are encouraged to try this new feature which should make reserving a map quicker and easier.

A rewrite of this magnitude is not a trivial undertaking (there are around 3000 lines of code!) and there will be bugs and details that can be improved.  I plan to release minor updates for the next few events so please let me have your feedback so that I can add your points to my development to-do list.

Peter Palmer Trophy

Congratulations to the Juniors who finished 7th ( the top placed southern team) out of 22 teams in the year’s Peter Palmer trophy which was held on Sep 11th in Leicestershire.

The Peter Palmer trophy is a national event.  It is a relay race for Junior Teams of 6-9 members starting in the middle of the night (usually around 4 – 4.30) and has 2 or 3 legs in the dark, one at dawn and then two in the light of the early morning.

Yvette Baker Trophy Final

The final of the Yvette Baker Trophy was held at Wormley Woods on 3rd July 2016.
This is a team competition for juniors and the Club had qualified for the final at a
previous round. While not the largest team, some strong individual performances led
to the team placing 5th out of the 13 teams qualifying for the final, a notable result in
a national competition.

Thank you to all the Juniors who took part.
